Willem Verhoeven is born on April 30th 1949, married and has two adult daughters. He received his medical degree from the University of Utrecht (1974), was trained in Utrecht as neuropsychiatrist and neurophysiologist and finished his Ph.D degree on ‘Endorphins and Schizophrenia’ in 1983 at the University of Utrecht (Prof.Dr. Herman M. van Praag and late Prof.Dr. David de Wied).
He worked as neuropsychiatrist for some years at the Department of Psychiatry of the Utrecht University Hospital and was subsequently appointed at the University of Utrecht as Associate Professor in clinical and biological psychiatry. He was awarded with the Duphar International Antidepressant Award in 1987 and with the Ramaer Medal of the Dutch Society of Psychiatry in 1989.
In 1989 he left the Utrecht University to become director of residency training and head of the department of clinical research at the Vincent van Gogh Institute for Psychiatry in Venray, The Netherlands.
In 1999 he was appointed as part-time professor at the Department of Psychiatry of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Since june 2009 he is also head of the Centre of Excellence for Neuropsychiatry of the Vincent van Gogh Institute for Psychiatry.

Research interests

The research of Prof.Dr. Willem Verhoeven is mainly focussed on dimensional psychopathology, psychopharmacology, pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders and psychopathology in intellectually disabled patients. With respect to mental retardation, primary interests are the atypical presentation of psychopathology, the relationship between genes and behaviour and the study of the so called behavioural phenotypes. Research on psychopharmacology deals mainly with plasma levels of psychotropics and their metabolites in relation to clinical efficacy and pharmacokinetic interactions.

Publications

Bullet 

More than 300 manuscripts in (inter)national journals have been published and several hundreds presentations have been given at congresses and meetings about topics throughout the field of neuropsychiatry and psychopharmacology.
